Wearing a Breast Prosthesis
Why is wearing a prosthesis important?
The fitting of a weighted breast prosthesis is not only for aesthetic
appearances. It is also a therapeutic measure that replaces the weight of
the lost breast. When fitted with a breast prosthesis that matches the size
of the remaining breast, the weight equilibrium of the body is kept in balance.
Because the human body is essentially symmetrical, imbalance occurs when
a breast is removed. This imbalance can cause one shoulder to drop downward
and inward and the other shoulder to rise up. When the body is not properly
aligned, back, shoulder, and neck discomfort may result. A weighted silicone
breast form restores the body's natural balance by approximating the remaining
breast in weight and balance, as well as in projection and width. The MAXIMA silicone breast form warms to a woman's body temperature
and appears smooth and natural under clothing. The weight of the silicone
prosthesis will also keep the bra from riding up or pulling to one side.
How soon after a mastectomy can a weighted breast form be worn?
As soon as a woman receives permission from her physician, she can schedule an appointment to be fitted with a silicone breast form - usually in four to six weeks. Swelling and tenderness should be gone. The Doctor will decide when the patient is ready. During this recovery time, the MAXIMA Interim Form, which is ideal for wearing home from the hospital and throughout the healing process, can be used.
MAXIMA prostheses are covered by most Medical Aids. A prescription must be obtained from the Doctor for prostheses and bras. (Surgical bras are specifically designed with inside pockets
to hold a weighted prosthesis.)
How does one care for a prosthesis?
Whenever the bra is changed, one should carefully remove the breast form from its cover and gently hand wash it in a mild detergent in warm water. Rinse and pat dry. Return the form to a clean cover. When not being worn the prosthesis should be properly stored in its original box and cradle. The outer film can be damaged by punctures. Use special care around long finger nails, jewelry and domestic animals with sharp claws.
The MAXIMA Silicone
Prosthesis comes with a full 12 month warranty against manufacturers defects.
The average life span of a prosthesis is three to five years; however, with
proper care, the form could last years longer.
